After the attack on Fort Sumter in 1861, Colonel Edward Daniels of the Union Army was authorized to recruit and organize a battalion of cavalry from the great state of Wisconsin. During the next four years, the 1st Wisconsin proudly served from the back roads of Missouri to the battlefields of Georgia. Today, through historical reenactment, educational demonstrations and first person interpretation, members of the 1st Wisconsin strive to reenact history as experienced by the Civil War era Cavalryman. But more important than military custom and protocol, the 1st Wisconsin is a group of friends and family that have banded together with a common interest in historical preservation.
